Dr. Nixan Thottan is a dynamic and widely respected figure in the realms of journalism, media education, and social development. With over two decades of contribution to ethical journalism and creative expression, he has played a pivotal role in mentoring the next generation of media professionals and establishing structured platforms for digital communicators across India.
Dr. Thottan has served in various leadership capacities, including his role as Former Chief Executive Secretary of the Newspaper Association of India (NAI) from 2018 to 2020. He is currently the Secretary General of the Digital News & Media Council of India (DNMCI), where he leads efforts to create a unified, transparent, and empowering space for digital journalists and content creators nationwide.
He holds lifetime memberships in several distinguished international bodies, including the International Journalism Center, World Peace Development & Research Foundation (USA), and the Indo-Cuba Film and Cultural Forum. He also serves as General Secretary of WCC International and CAY India (Center for Adolescents and Youth India). His past roles include serving as Media Head and Executive Board Member of the SAARC Nations International Human Rights Association.
In recognition of his impactful work, Dr. Thottan has received numerous honors, including the “Best CEO of the Year” award by NAI (2018), the “Excellent Social Response Award” from Kerala Kaumudi during its centenary celebration (2021), and the prestigious 6th Satyajit Ray International Documentary & Short Film Award for “Best Campus Film Director” in 2022, presented by the Satyajit Ray Film Society International.
Dr. Thottan has been conferred with two honorary doctorates—one in Peace & Social Work from the Academy of Universal Global Peace, UK (September 3, 2016), and another in Business from EDU–USA (December 3, 2022, Dubai).
As a filmmaker, Dr. Nixan Thottan has directed several impactful documentaries and short films that address pressing social issues. His notable works include the documentary series titled Village Documentary Series (6 episodes) and the short film “The Time is Now – Milkey Chalo”, which focus on Girl Child Rights, Women’s Empowerment, and Human Trafficking, Etc. These projects, produced for the Mary Ward Social Centre International, Darjeeling, received international appreciation for their powerful messaging and social relevance.
In addition to his professional film work, Dr. Thottan has led numerous youth and campus film initiatives, many of which have been recognized for their Educational Impact and contribution to social awareness. His creative talents extend beyond filmmaking - he is also an accomplished Lyricist, Entrepreneur, and Dedicated Social Worker, continuously using his platforms to inspire, educate, and drive meaningful change in society.
As an author, his inspiring books—Bits of Success (Malayalam), Mr. Virus (Malayalam & English), Am, Who Am I (Multilingual), and Dreams of a Nation (Malayalam)—have deeply influenced and empowered youth across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
Dr. Thottan continues to dedicate his efforts to fostering Media Responsibility, Youth Development, and Cross - Cultural Understanding through Journalism, Film, Education, and Social Service.
